“Out of the car” thinking

Don Shoup sent me this link. He says it's an unusually sensible blog post. I think it's typical, probably akin to my "why don't we all carpool and solve the world's problems" approach. A simplistic answer to a complex problem.

Of course, thinking outside the car is the only way to really get to the root of the problem. Too many people want to be somewhere and have no way to get there unless they drive. Short term knee jerk solutions simply don't hack it.

Don's approach is a long term solution. It involves not only changing how we drive but how we live. Make downtowns more attractive and people will move there. Then they can walk, or bike, or take a jitney to where they want to go.

The first step – raise parking costs. Make it more difficult to park, and people will find alternatives and change their habits – the Costco effect.

I think that when you drive, its more efficient to think when you are not yet driving so that you won't be distracted.
