Handbags at Dawn in Glasgow
A police officer on duty can park a Police car pretty much wherever they want "in the line of duty" but when it comes to parking their own cars they have to obey the same rules as everyone else as a number of the City's finest have found out to their cost near the Stewart Street Police headquarters. Edinburgh City Council Parking officers have started ticketing cars belonging to Police Officers parked on yellow lines outside the Police building.
"No fair" cried the cops, "there is an unwritten rule that officers are allowed to park there" and "cars parked just a hundred meters away were not ticked". Bet you never heard those excuses before. The Police officers complaint seems to be that (just like everyone else) they don't have enough parking at work and when they turn up late it's the only place left. I wonder how many times the copper who said this has let a driver off speeding because they were late for work? No I didn't think so either.
Anyhow this isn't the first confrontation between the Police and other members of "the extended Police family". In 2008, eight officers had their cars impounded and were charged £165 each to recover them after parking illegally. The police response was to convert some of their landscaped garden into car parking, even though the police building is a few meters from a local paid car park. Perhaps, like London they should let the cops ride the buses free?
