Law breakers complain about being caught?
The London Borough of Hounslow has switched off five cameras used to detect and penalise illegally parking drivers after complaints from motorists. It was alleged that residents got insufficient warning that the cameras were going to be used. A Council spokesman stated that there had been "a lot" of complaints but he said a similar system had been in force in Chiswick, in the east of the borough, for more than two years. The Council is now investigating what has happened and will report back before deciding what to do.
Did I miss something? The laws on illegal parking were first promulgated in 1967. You learn what the signs and lines mean when you learn to drive and "Doh" if you break the rules, don't cry foul if you get a ticket. When I was a young transport planner I went with my boss to a public meeting where somebody was bitching about the unfairness of getting penalised for committing a crime, i.e. parking illegally. After putting up with this nonsense for about 10 minutes my boss suggested a radical proposal to this gentleman to stop getting parking tickets; stop parking illegally. In Hounslow, the problem is people parking illegally, not how they are detected, by backing down this way the Councillors have surrendered the stage to the law breakers. Bad move.
