We talk endlessly about parking, boring maybe but it’s paid my mortgage and for all those other things that make life worth living. However when we say parking we actually mean car parking and so a story out of Delhi in India is a timely reminder that there are other things on the road and when they are not being used they have to be stored somewhere too.
Buses in Delhi cater for about 60% of movement in the city and the public bus company Delhi Transport Corporation operates the biggest fleet of natural gas powered buses in the world and their fleet is growing and becoming more sophisticated. The combined fleet of the DTC and various private operators means that altogether there are about 10,000 buses used in the City running on about 670 routes.
Now here’s the problem: at present the DTC is embroiled in a handbag fight over the future of its planned millennium depot which will be a part of the Commonwealth Games site and at 1,000 spaces will be the biggest bus depot in the world. Even then the city would only have 5,000 bus parking spaces, leaving an equal number that get stored on the street. So parking managers of the world, as you grumble over having to deal with illegally parked cars, spare a few moments for the guys in Delhi who have got 5,000 buses blocking the roads.
