Motorists in Nelson Lancashire are having a hissy fit because they got ticketed during the recent bad weather. We had the worst weather for over 40 years with temperatures falling to -20C, one degree warmer than the North Pole on the same day. Nelson is hilly and locals who managed to get their cars out of the side roads, which hadn't been ploughed or gritted, decided to leave their cars overnight on the main routes, which had been cleared. They got ticketed. Local Councillor Iqbal said he had collected 14 tickets from local residents. "That's interesting said the County Council (who are responsible for both clearing the snow and ice and for enforcing the parking) because we only issued eight in that area."
County Councillor Young, who is in charge of Highways and Transport, said "It was the responsibility of residents to move their cars before the time instructed. They did not do so and must face the consequences." Now you are right Councillor Young, but you are wrong. Your Council was responsible for maintaining highway access and because of abnormal circumstances completely outside your control or ability to deal with (the weather) you couldn't do it. No criticism, that's the world as it is. The drivers had a responsibility to park legally but due to circumstances outside their control (your failure of service) they couldn't. Be nice Councillor Young, be nice.
