Sometimes it seems that every iota of news on parking is against something. Against paying, against regulation against the town the city the police, anything. Change the colour of the meter and someone will be against it. Therefore when I saw this story I did a double take.
Portishead is a suburb of Bristol and the local have turned out in strength to lobby the Council and the Police (people of a nervous disposition should not read further) FOR better parking enforcement. Apparently the high street suffers from traffic and safety problems caused by illegal parking, which remains the responsibility of the local Police. The level of Police activity was such that locals had become convinced that the restrictions were no longer enforceable. Town councillor Ron Hazelton, says that he has campaigned for the return of traffic wardens for years, so he will be delighted that following a public meeting the local Police have a given a commitment that they will take action. Of course not everyone's happy and rule breaking drivers have been handing abuse to the Police support staff doing the ticketing. However, unlike Council parking officers, abusing the Police gets you a free visit to the cells in Portishead Police station.
